Fig 6.6 – Western Ethnocentrism
Text: Page 301
Jung traveled outside the Western world to Algiers, Tunis, Uganda, and Kenya, finding differences but many cultural similarities, especially regarding importance of dreams, cultural symbols, and experiences of the Self beyond the ego. One of his most significant visits was to the Taos pueblo in New Mexico, where he met with Chief Mountain Lake and witnessed the decimation of a culture by a white society dominated by thought and progress. The values of a spiritually unenlightened culture are symbolized by how Western ethnocentrism ‘burns’ away the spiritual energies of indigenous peoples.
