In analytical psychology, the process of ego transcendence occurs through the transcendent function and the ego-Self axis. The transcendent function facilitates the union of the conscious and unconscious contents of the human mind.
Jung believed the symbols of transcendence represent humanity striving to attain the highest goal, which is to realize the full potential of the individual Self. For Jung, a shaman has often symbolized ego transcendence in history because of its ability to transcend the ego and fly like a bird above the ego universe.
