The Hare Krishna became a lasting symbol of interest in American culture of Eastern thought with the song Hare Krishna in the Broadway musical Hair and in My Sweet Lord, one of the most famous hits by Beatle George Harrison. For the spiritually starved American culture, the Hare Krishna mantra symbolized the need for spiritual joy, which occurred when chanting God’s holy names. Mantra, the repetition of a phrase or word, is now used to calm and focus the mind of many Americans in their daily meditation practices.
