The Buddha used the word bhavana rather than meditation to explain meditation practices to a largely rural farming culture who cultivated the earth. Like the human mind, no matter how damaged the land might become, it could continue to be cultivated and produce a nourishing harvest. The Buddha taught that meditation, like farming, is symbolic of an endless practice of harvesting a calm, reflective, alert, and luminous mind.
