Humanistic psychology and the Peace Movement shared many cultural values as the Western world struggled to contain the shadow of communism while dealing with its own shadow of imperialism in the Vietnam War and throughout the postcolonial world. The symbol of the dove and the olive branch has been utilized by Christians throughout history as a symbol for peace. After World War II, with the possibility of nuclear annihilation, the symbol became secularized by Pablo Picasso in his Dove lithograph. The peace sign known today was developed in the 1950s by Gerald Holtom for the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. The symbol was created from two semaphore signal flag letters for N-Nuclear and D-Disarmed.
