Heidegger believed that freedom was limited because of being thrown into the facticity of the world. The thrownness symbolized the limitations of being male or female, rich or poor, American, or Chinese, as well as the limitations of the historic period into which one was born. The limitations of freedom were intended to provide a context for life, not an excuse for avoiding the opportunity to experience all the possibilities of human existence. The constraints were a call to seek freedom with all its limitations.
