Fig 3.7 – Philemon

Jung discovered a symbolic figure that first appeared in 1913 in a dream. This dream would provide wise guidance for the rest of his life. In the dream, he saw the symbol of a sea-blue sky covered by brown clods of earth that were breaking apart. Out of the earth emerged an old man, Philemon, with kingfisher wings and the horns of a bull flying across the sky carrying a bunch of keys. After the dream, he painted the symbol and was struck by the resulting synchronicity when he found a dead kingfisher in his garden, a bird rarely seen in Zurich.
