Erich Von Daniken, in the Chariot of the Gods, explained that religious myths had their origins in the encounters with superior beings from outer space. In Flying Saucers: A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Skies, Jung addressed in psychological terms the Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) phenomenon. For Jung, UFOs represented the need for symbols, myths, and a visionary savior. Throughout history, the rumor of something coming from outer space occurred when there was significant unconscious psychological tension, when the contradictions in the conscious mind became untenable, and when the world was in a state of severe distress and seeking salvation. In response to the current world-wide unconscious stress, interest in UFO’s has increased as the government has renamed UFO’s the Unidentified Areal Phenomena (UAP).
