Existing from time immemorial, archetypes keep recurring worldwide in all cultures through myth, fairy tales, legends, and stories. Archetypes produce universal symbols that are characteristic of human nature, and, like instincts, archetypes give form to the inherited structure of the psyche. Jung spoke of four major archetypes: animus/anima, the Self, shadow, and the persona. Later, he referred to the wise old man, child, mother, and the maiden.
