Beyond the natural world, archetypes predispose people to view the world in specific psychological ways. Jung discovered many archetypes, giving some more attention than others. One of the most important was Persona, the root of the word “personality,” which caused people to present only a part of their personality to the public and conceal their true nature to themselves. The symbol of Persona is a mask, which symbolized that the real, the total, personality was hidden behind it. It was a reminder that to be in concert with the real self, psychological work needed to occur to make the mask to the outer world more authentic.
