It is not just that people produce symbols, humanity needs symbols for psychological health whether it be inside their churches or when the players of their favorite football team hold up the Super Bowl trophy. Symbol gives meaning and emotional life to all aspects of daily life. Most importantly, when we change our symbols, we change ourselves, the inner fabric of our psyche.
