Fig 2.7 – The Id

Text: Page 61

This symbol provides a way to understand the Freudian concept of id which is like a powerful ocean wave constantly “crashing” against the ego. Freud was influenced by Charles Darwin (1809–1882) and read most of his works as he was developing his theory of psychoanalysis. Darwin, like Freud, believed that humans were motivated by instincts rather than by reason. For Freud it was the unconscious id, not the ego, which created the most significant reaction to human instincts. The id is the location of aggressive and violent instincts, the instincts that need to be repressed for the survival of civilization.
