In the human body, homeostasis is essential for mental and physical health. In Freudian thought, people are born with psychological needs that are met by finding a satisfying “object,” a human being, for homeostasis. When instinctual and psychological needs are not met, an internal imbalance is detected by the homeostatic mechanisms, a drive attempts to restore homeostasis. Mental disturbance occurs when a drive cannot find the hemostasis of a satisfying “object.”
