Fig 2.26-Unconscious Education

The neglect and denial cannot diminish the presence of the unconscious. Most sadly, even within departments of psychology, there is a lack of coursework and education on the unconscious throughout American learning institutions. As this chapter has shown, the lack of education ignores the reality that psychoanalysis has developed significantly beyond Freud. One major reason for the lack of psychoanalytic acknowledgment in modern psychology is the incorrect view that psychodynamic psychotherapy is not an evidence-based practice (Shedler, 2010). Also, there are no specific psychoanalytic course requirements in the extensive list of APA requirements for accreditation of its doctoral programs in clinical psychology. Even more significant is the warning of Freud that a denial of the unconscious will continue to perpetuate violence and war and imperil humanity itself.
