Relational psychoanalysis view drives as arising from actual interpersonal events, not from pressure for id gratification. A child develops ego structures from interpersonal experiences with love objects which become the relational object of gratification. As the symbol suggests, these parental experiences become unconsciously internalized objects and the initial representation of all human relationships. This approach led to the creation of an objective-relations psychology.
