In the twentieth century American culture woman became synonymous with mother, motherhood equated with femininity and the view that anatomy is destiny for both women and men. The emerging feminist movement questioned the role of men and women in American culture, particularly related to parenting. Questioned was the middle-class value that men provided financial support and women provided emotional support to the family. A patriarchal psychology which underemphasized the role of men in family life, the father, and overemphasized the role of women, the mother.
