Fig 2.11 – Supergo

Text: Page 73

A newborn baby is driven totally by the needs of the id. These needs can only come to consciousness through symbolizing a loving mother. It is through parental socialization that the baby develops a superego conscience and an ego-ideal. Conscience develops from the internalization of parental punishment while ego-ideal results from the internalization of parental rewards. Socialization is the ongoing process of the internalization of parental values and beliefs. Freud believed that if there was only id and ego, without a superego, human beings would not be able to distinguish themselves from animals and there would be no civilization.
