James provided a value-neutral distinction between souls that are healthy and sick. The former soul views the world as basically good. The latter soul cannot overcome the melancholy, the depression, and the belief that the world is basically evil. Conversion is the key if one is to experience their own unique religious experience. To explain conversion, James utilizes the symbol of mechanical equilibrium. During a conversion, which is necessary for a true personal religious experience, there is incredible emotional excitement mixed with an equally emotional release of “letting go.” This results in a net force, the secondary Newtonian law of motion of physics, which is the force and mass of an object being equal.
