Titchener (1915/2018) attempted to classify the structures of consciousness by symbolically modeling chemistry. As the chemist breaks down chemicals to its component elements, like water into hydrogen and oxygen, Titchener believed that a similar process could occur by breaking down the structures of sensations and thoughts that compose the mind. Wundt wanted to explain consciousness through structuralism, Titchener wanted to describe the structures of consciousness.
