Since mental illness was perceived only as a brain disease with psychology and sociology minimized, psychiatry turned to “shocking” the brain by a variety of methods under the guise that these new and innovative treatments could possibly cure mental illness. The idea that mental illness was caused by an “overheated” brain had returned, and psychiatry now had the full force of modern chemicals, drugs, and technology at their disposal to prove their value to the medical community.
