By its very title, A Beautiful Mind, the movie provided a powerful symbol for individuals with mental illness, challenging the current belief of a permanent disabling brain disease and the historic overemphasis on the “overheated and damaged brain.” The Nash story indicated that a serious mental illness does not preclude great achievement, even a Nobel Prize.
