Fig 3.16 – Teleology and Causality
Text: Page 110
Aristotle conceived of change in terms of purpose, which led to his theory of teleology, from the Greek root telos, meaning the purpose, the end, and logos, to reason, to explain. Aristotle believed when reason and nature worked collaboratively together the real cause and purpose was transformed from a material object into something useful. This transformation highlights the integration of being and becoming. Every material object originates from being, but without becoming, being cannot be transformed into something useful. Aristotle explained change in terms of causality; why things change. He believed without the why, the cause, there could never be a true understanding of the natural world.
