Tikkun Olam means “to repair the world.” Although not formally developed until the third century CE, the phrase “for the sake of repairing the world” first appeared in the Oral Torah, the oral tradition documented during the Second Temple Period (536 BCE–70 CE). Jewish tradition and history offer rich troves of examples of the importance of social responsibility, ethics, and social justice. Tikkun Olam impacts Judaism across the world, a reminder that social justice and activism needs to be viewed as an international effort.
