Chinese women painfully bound their feet to be small like Western women. Confucius did not solve the problem of the social and economic status of women in Chinese society, how paternalism can “bind” and oppress women throughout human history. Paternalism that emerged in Confucianism has continued to undermine the social and economic development of women even in modern China.
